अकबर के राजत्वकाल में मुग़ल साम्राज्य का विस्तार हुआ और उसके साथ ही राजा-प्रजा को शान्तिपूर्ण जीवन-निर्वाह का अवसर भी मिला। सम्राट् अकबर को युद्धक्षेत्रों में बहुत काल तक व्यस्त रहना पड़ा, परन्तु उसके प्रताप से साम्राज्य मे, और विशेष कर राजधानी मे, ऐसी सुव्यवस्था हो गई थी कि साहित्य, कला, इतिहास, धर्म, राजनीति आदि विषयों की ओर लोगों को ध्यान देने का अवकाश मिल सका था। हिन्दू और मुसळमानों में परस्पर सद्भाव की जागृति होने लगी थी और दोनों की सभ्यता, विचार, धर्मनीति में घोर संघर्षण के स्थान में शान्तिपूर्ण प्रभाव पड़ने लगा था। क्रूरकर्मा यवन जाति से विजित हिन्दू प्रजा अपनी सभ्यता और धर्म की रक्षा करने में नितान्त असमर्थन हो चली थी; परन्तु अपने साम्राज्य को सुदृढ़ करने के लिये मुगलों ने हिन्दुओं के साथ व्यवहार बदलना नीतिपूर्ण समझा। इसका फल यह हुआ कि अकबर की उदार नीति ने हिन्दुओं के आचार और धर्म को तिरस्कार की दृष्टि से न देख कर उन्हें पुनः जागृत होने का अवसर दिया । हिन्दुओं ने भी इसका पूर्ण लाभ उठाया। अकबर ने स्वयं संस्कृत ग्रंथों का फारसी भाषान्तर कराया । शास्त्रीय गान- विद्या का प्रचार हुआ। कला की भी उन्नति हुई। और हिन्दू प्रजा के मन से पददलित और विजित होने का भाव कम होने 'लगा । परन्तु सब से महत्त्व की बात जो इस काल में हुई वह हिन्दी काव्य की उन्नति थी । अकबरी दरबार के नवरत्न इतिहास में प्रसिद्ध हैं। उनमें से कई हिन्दी के उत्तम कवि थे और कवियों के आश्रयदाता थे। हिन्दी हिन्दुओं की भाषा थी इसलिये राजद्रबार में वह अनाद्वत नहीं थी । वरन् वह हिन्दू और मुसलमान दोनों की भाषा थी । अकबर स्वयं हिन्दी में कविता करता था और उसको फुटकर कविताएँ अब भी मिलती हैं। दूसरे, वैष्णव धर्म के प्रचार से भो हिन्दी भाषा की अपूर्व उन्नति हो रही थी। भक्ति-भाव भाषा रूप में व्यक्त होकर व्रजभूमि से उमड़ कर दूर देशों को भी साबित करने लगा था । सूर और अष्टछाप से अन्य कवि इसी समय भाषा को अलंकृत कर रहे थे। तुलसी की प्रतिभा इसी काल में अपनी अद्वितीय ज्योति दिखा गई।

The Hindu people conquered by the cruel Yavana caste had become completely incapable of protecting their civilization and religion; But in order to strengthen their empire, the Mughals considered it ethical to change their behavior with Hindus. The result was that Akbar's liberal policy did not look at the conduct and religion of Hindus with contempt and gave them an opportunity to awaken again. Hindus also took full advantage of this. Akbar himself got Sanskrit texts translated into Persian. Classical singing and learning was promoted. Art also progressed. And the feeling of being downtrodden and conquered started decreasing in the minds of Hindu people. But the most important thing that happened during this period was the progress of Hindi poetry. The Navratnas of Akbari Darbar are famous in history. Many of them were excellent Hindi poets and patrons of poets. Hindi was the language of Hindus, hence it was not unique in the royal court. Rather, it was the language of both Hindus and Muslims. Akbar himself used to write poetry in Hindi and he still receives some poems. Secondly, due to the propagation of Vaishnav religion, the Hindi language was making unprecedented progress. The feeling of devotion, expressed in the form of language, started spreading from Vrajabhoomi and proving it to distant countries also. Other poets were embellishing the language at this time through Sur and Ashtachhap. Tulsi's talent showed its unique brilliance during this period.
