डॉ. जगदीश चंद्र बोस विश्व के पहले ऐसे वैज्ञानिक थे जिन्होंने दुनिया को सर्वप्रथम बताया कि पेड़-पौधे और धातुओं में भी संवेदना होती हैं। उनके इस सिद्धांत से वनस्पति विज्ञान के क्षेत्र में चिंतन के एक नये अध्याय की शुरूआत हुई। डॉ. जगदीश चंद्र बोस का जन्म 30 नवम्बर 1858 ईसवी को ढाका के राढ़ीखाल नामक गाँव में हुआ। जगदीश के पिता अंग्रेज़ सरकार डिप्टी कलेक्टर थे। अतः इनका लालन-पालन बड़े शानो-शौकत के साथ किया गया। पिता बाबू भगवान चंद्र बोस एक चरित्रवान, निर्मोक और धार्मिक प्रवृत्ति के व्यक्ति थे। उनकी माता भी सरल स्वभाव वाली एक सुसंस्कृत घरेलू महिला थी पिता एवं माता के इस सरल एवं सहज स्वभाव का बालक जगदीश पर काफी दूरगामी प्रभाव पड़ा। वे बचपन से ही एक गंभीर प्रकृति के बालक थे । बालक जगदीश की आरंभिक शिक्षा गाँव के ही एक पाठशाला में हुई। उनके पिता चाहते थे कि उनका बेटा अंग्रेजी शिक्षा के उद्देश्यों के विपरीत प्रकृति से प्रेम करना सीखे एवं अपने गरीब सहपाठियों के प्रति सरल व सहज भाव रखे। सचमुच, अपने पिता के इच्छा के अनुरूप ही जगदीश बचपन से ही सभ्य एवं सुसंस्कृत बालक के रूप में जाने जाते थे। गाँव की आरंभिक शिक्षा समाप्त करने के बाद उनके पिता ने उन्हें आगे की शिक्षा प्राप्त करने के कलकत्ता भेजा। वहाँ जगदीश ने सेंट जेवियर स्कूल में दाखिला लिया और वहीं से उन्होंने बी.ए. की परीक्षा प्रथम श्रेणी में उत्तीर्ण की। उन दिनों अपने देश में विज्ञान में उच्च अध्ययन के लिए कोई. समुचित व्यवस्था नहीं थी। अतः जब जगदीश ने विज्ञान में उच्च डिग्री अर्जित करने के लिए इगलैंड जाने की अपनी इच्छा पिता को बताई तो उनके पिता इस बात के लिए सहर्ष तैयार हो गए।
Dr. Jagadish Chandra Bose was the first scientist in the world who first told the world that trees, plants and metals also have sensitivity. This theory of his started a new chapter of thinking in the field of botanical science. Dr. Jagadish Chandra Bose was born on 30 November 1858 AD in a village called Radhikhal in Dhaka. Jagdish's father was a British Government Deputy Collector. Therefore, they were brought up with great respect. Father Babu Bhagwan Chandra Bose was a person of character, free-spirited and religious nature. His mother was also a cultured housewife with simple nature. This simple and easy-going nature of father and mother had a far-reaching impact on child Jagdish. He was a child of serious nature since childhood. Child Jagdish's initial education took place in a school in the village itself. His father wanted his son to learn to love nature, contrary to the objectives of English education, and to have simple and easy feelings towards his poor classmates. In fact, as per the wishes of his father, Jagdish was known as a civilized and cultured child since childhood. After completing his primary education in the village, his father sent him to Calcutta to pursue further education. There Jagdish took admission in St. Xavier's School and from there he completed his B.A. Passed the examination in first division. In those days no one could pursue higher studies in science in our country. There was no proper arrangement. Therefore, when Jagdish told his father about his desire to go to England to earn a higher degree in science, his father happily agreed to do so.
